Opening in 2025, the new Hopkins Student Center will transform the Homewood campus experience by providing enhanced opportunities for relaxation and socialization, fostering student connections, and offering larger performance and gathering spaces.
Located at the intersection of North Charles and 33rd streets, the center will be a purpose-built social destination, connecting students to one another and opening campus to the broader Baltimore community.
The building’s innovative design features an open concept “living room” as well as spaces tailored to meet the diverse and evolving needs of the Johns Hopkins community — including student resource centers and support services as well as flexible meeting rooms and multipurpose spaces for the university’s more than 400 student organizations.
Through a reimagined surrounding landscape and connecting exterior spaces, the center will also provide opportunities for outdoor exhibits and pop-up artistic performances while supporting university sustainability goals.
Architect Chooses Heavy Timber Construction for Hopkins Student Center — “Timber, for a building of this scale, is almost unbeatable,” said Bjarke Ingels, head of Bjarke Ingels Group, the lead architect. “The bones of the building — the columns, the beams, the slabs — are beautiful in their own right. Without any material finishes, they are by themselves beautiful.”
