A Teammate Remembered

Tradition and Scholarship Honor Blue Jay #19 Jeremy Huber

In 2015, Johns Hopkins freshman lacrosse player Jeremy Huber unexpectedly passed away, just before the Blue Jays’ season opener.

Now, 10 years later, his impact is still remembered at the university, both through a scholarship at the Peabody Institute and a special tradition with his lacrosse jersey #19.

During the lacrosse seasons from 2015-2018, #19 jersey was not assigned to anyone else, as Jeremy stayed on the team’s roster until his class graduated. In 2018, Jeremy’s former classmates decided that moving forward, the senior players would select a recipient to wear #19.

In 2022, the tradition evolved, and now every year, jersey #19 is given to a deserving freshman for his first season. This past season that player was midfielder, Liam Burke, class of 2028.

“Wearing #19 has meant more than just a jersey. It’s given me a perspective and sense of purpose I never imagined I’d find on the field,” Burke says.

“Sometimes, when competing at this level, it is easy to become consumed with the game. Wearing #19 reminds me that there is something bigger than lacrosse, bigger than myself, that allows me to play with enjoyment, representing Jeremy’s legacy and our school with honor,” he says.

In addition to this tradition, Jeremy — who also loved playing the piano — is also remembered through the Jeremy Huber #19 Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Piano.

Spurred on by a $400 donation in 2015 from Blue Jays’ fan, Truitt Sunderland, who was 12-year-old at the time, more than 140 individuals then made gifts, ranging from $5 to $30,000 to create this endowed scholarship which has been awarded every year since 2018.

“I have extreme gratitude in being named the recipient of the Jeremy Huber #19 Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Piano,” says Peabody freshman, Edward Soler, this year’s recipient.

“It’s an honor to receive this award, and it means a great deal to me personally and my family back in Canada. As a freshman piano student, this scholarship will greatly impact my studies at Peabody over the next four years,” he says.
