The Bloomberg American Health Initiative funds early studies of detection technology

Americans face numerous public health threats, but few make as many headlines as the national opioid epidemic. The Bloomberg American Health Initiative — created in 2016 by a gift from Bloomberg Philanthropies — funded one of the first studies of a technology that can test for fentanyl in drug samples.

The research showed that the technology works, says Joshua Sharfstein, the director of the Bloomberg American Health Initiative, and 90 percent of the people involved in the study expressed an interest in using it.

“It can be not only helpful to save their lives but also can be an engagement tool to get them into livesaving and life transforming treatment,” Sharfstein says.
